The Stories of Change competition is a unique and powerful initiative that invites everyday people to share their stories, spark conversations, and help shape the future of Tanzania. Launched in July 2021 by JamiiForums, this competition encourages participants to use digital storytelling as a tool for change. It’s about more than just telling stories; it’s about amplifying voices, especially those that are often underrepresented, like the youth and people with disabilities.
The heart of Stories of Change lies in the belief that a platform to share their ideas and experiences is crucial for inclusive progress in the country. Citizens are invited to write about the challenges they see in their communities and propose creative solutions. It’s a way for people to not only reflect on the issues they face but also to become a part of the solution. Through this competition, JamiiForums is fostering a space where individuals can make their voices heard and inspire real, lasting change.
Why It Matters: Empowering Voices for a Brighter Future
The goal of the competition is straightforward: to empower people to tell their stories and be part of the change they want to see. It’s not just about highlighting problems, but about proposing solutions and imagining a better future for everyone. Whether it's about improving governance, tackling corruption, or addressing diverse issues in the country, these stories have the potential to make a real impact.
By focusing on digital storytelling, Stories of Change taps into the power of the internet to reach a wide audience. The stories, written primarily in Swahili, resonate with people across the region and beyond. They contribute to a growing library of digital content that reflects the diverse experiences and dreams of Tanzanians, both for the presence and the future.
How It Works: A Collaborative Judging Process
One of the unique aspects of Stories of Change is the way the stories are evaluated. It’s a blend of community input and expert opinion. Members of JamiiForums, where the competition is hosted, get to vote on their favorite stories, contributing 40% of the overall decision. This gives the community a real voice in the process, allowing them to lift up the stories that resonate most with them.
The remaining 60% of the decision is made by a panel of judges, who carefully review each story. They look at how well the story is told, the significance of the issue it addresses, the practicality of the proposed solutions, and how easy it is for someone outside the field to understand. This balance between community voting and expert judgment ensures that the best stories are recognized, not just for their creativity, but for their potential to inspire change.
Real Impact: From Stories to Solutions
One of the most exciting aspects of the Stories of Change competition is that it’s not just about telling stories—it’s about making a difference. Over the years, some of the ideas shared through the competition have gone on to influence real policy changes in Tanzania.
For example, in 2021, one participant wrote about the inefficiencies of traditional electricity meters and suggested the use of smart meters. Just a year later, the government began implementing a smart-meter project. In 2022, another story highlighted the challenges facing the Youth and Women Development Fund, leading to the Prime Minister suspending the fund’s loans to address those issues. And in 2023, a participant wrote about the corruption in traffic police operations, proposing that officers wear body cameras. By May 2024, this idea had been implemented as part of the government’s strategy to fight corruption.
These are just a few examples of how stories submitted to the competition have made a real difference. The competition is not just about recognition—it’s about inspiring solutions that can be put into action.
Growth and Evolution of the Competition
Since its launch, Stories of Change has grown both in scope and influence. In the first year, the competition received 944 stories, with 10 winners being awarded prizes. The top winner took home five million Tanzanian shillings. The competition’s impact was clear from the start. The first edition’s award ceremony was witnessed by key figures like Dr. Katrin Borneman from the German Embassy, who served as the guest of honor at the ceremony.
In 2022, the competition expanded, receiving 1,515 stories. Once again, the top prize was five million Tanzanian shillings, and 20 stories were awarded in total. This year also saw the launch of JamiiCheck, a fact-checking tool aimed at promoting truth and transparency in digital content. The Minister of Information, Communication, and Information Technology, Nape Nnauye, served as the guest of honor, highlighting the competition’s growing influence.
By 2023, the competition had begun to focus more on specific themes. That year, the theme was “Governance and Accountability,” resulting in a more focused set of stories. Although fewer stories were published that year—1,204 in total—the quality was higher, and the top prize was increased to seven million Tanzanian shillings. The awards ceremony was attended by Mobhare Matinyi, the Government Spokesperson, and partners like St. Augustine University of Tanzania and the Union of Tanzania Press Clubs (UTPC) played a key role in supporting the competition.
The 2024 Edition: Looking Toward the Future
As the competition enters its fourth year, the focus for 2024 is particularly significant. Tanzania is nearing the end of its Development Vision 2025, a plan that has guided the country’s growth for the past 25 years. With this in mind, the theme for the 2024 competition is “Tanzania Tuitakayo”—“The Tanzania We Want.” This theme invites participants to look forward and imagine what Tanzania could become in the next 25 years.
The 2024 edition of Stories of Change has been encouraging citizens to reflect on the successes and challenges of the past and to propose bold, creative ideas for the future. The competition aimed to collect stories that can help shape Tanzania’s Vision 2050, the next chapter in the country’s journey of progress.
This year’s Stories of Change competition has been a huge success, with an incredible 1,893 stories submitted, far exceeding expectations. Out of these, 1,730 were published, making it one of the most engaging years yet. What’s been truly inspiring is the increased participation from a wide range of voices, especially people with disabilities, who shared powerful ideas on how to build a more inclusive Tanzania.
The theme Tanzania Tuitakayo (The Tanzania We Want) really resonated with participants, encouraging them to imagine the country’s future. We also saw more people using both Swahili and English, broadening the scope of the competition. This year, AI played a bigger role too, helping many storytellers improve the quality of their submissions. As a result, we’ve seen a flood of creative and thought-provoking ideas that are sparking meaningful discussions about how to shape Tanzania’s future.
A Platform for Change
Ultimately, Stories of Change is about giving people a voice and a platform to share their ideas, experiences, and dreams for the future. It’s about creating a space where digital storytelling can inspire action and drive progress. Whether it’s through amplifying citizen’s voices, encouraging meaningful discussions, or real-world impact, this competition is making a difference.
As Tanzania moves forward with its Vision 2050, the stories shared through Stories of Change will continue to play a role in shaping the country’s future. By bringing together the voices of citizens, Stories of Change is helping to build a more inclusive, creative, and innovative Tanzania.
